By far the jewel off Black Keys's El Caminohas to be "Little Black Submarines." The song is acoustic meets turbulent guitar riffs meets Dan's effortless yet tender voice singing "...everybody knows that a broken-heart is blind."
At the moment I am a virtual audience member of the Black Keys live in concert. You can be too! They won't be touring anywhere in or around Texas next Spring so, for me, this will have to do. Check it:
It's out people. "Lonely Boy" is availabe for your streaming. I wasn't disappointed at all. Thank You Black Keys! It's like a continuation of Brothers but with a hint of that raw quality "the Keys" are known for. Just a hint. It's clear that they've progressed in sound. But one things for sure...they've still got soul. Check it:
It's a sleepless night. I'm just not tired yet. Perhaps I slept too much during the day. So I've been trying to avoid my headphones because I listen to way too much music and as a result my ears are taking a beating, but I can't resist. I'll bargain and settle for low volume. So the other night I had Black Keys on shuffle and stumbled upon "everywhere I go." It's exactly what a classic blues-rock song should be. Check it...
Just recently I found out that the amazing track, "never gonna give you up," by The Black Keys is actually a cover. So I sought out to find the original. After entering the phrase "never gonna give you up" on youtube's search engine, I found out that they certainly didn't cover Rick Astley's song (which I'm sure you will recognize when you press play) and they didn't cover Barry White's "never gonna give you up" either. The final option was Jerry Butler. I clicked. And lo-and-behold, there was the exact same tune as track 14 on Brothers. The original is just as good. Let's just say that The Black Keys sort of remastered the original. They exemplify the whimper of the guitar but mostly they kept the same sounds. Success! Yes, definitely a successful cover. Oh, and a little research on Jerry Butler will mention that he was part of The Impressions. Sound familiar? I bet you've heard "people get ready." Maybe? Or maybe you've heard of Curtis Mayfield. He was also in the The Impressions with Jerry Butler. Anyways, below is Jerry Butler's version of "never gonna give you up."
Today was another one of those warm nights when the skies are clear and the winds are fierce. A good night for cruising in Laredo. The neon open signs are captured by our light sensitive eyes and headlights decorate the streets. Turn on the music. Roll down the windows and the moment is perfect.
My sister treated me for a sweet lemonade raspa at this cool snack joint on Arkansas Street. We drove down most of McPherson smiling every time my one year old nephew lifted his arms up as if he was on a roller-coaster. And his mother joined in. And then I--the driver--joined in but quick as to not lose control of the wheel.
It was 10pm and our original destination was Pinguinos (a place with no penguins but plentiful in fatty and sugar-loaded snacks). It was way too crowded. Our destination changed and we headed to Arkansas St., the raspa/snack spot my sister discovered during her pregnancy. So down south we rode. There we were. No longer laughing but now somewhat dejected. The three of us listening to her Black Keys playlist. I got to say that my sister knows how to pick them. "Lies" summarizes the nights mood. It was so perfect that we played it twice before moving on to the next BK song. Listen in...
